PHOENIX, Ariz. – After college baseball’s opening weekend, a man sits alone atop the national strikeout rankings – NM State’s Samy Natera.
The Juarez, Mexico native was named as one of college baseball Domestic Players of the Week after a blistering start on Saturday. Natera knocked out 14 Illinois-Chicago batters en route to earning their first win of the season. In 7.0 innings of work, Natera allowed only two hits and did not walk.
Along with Natera’s National Player of the Week honor, this is the fourth consecutive season in which an NM State player has won weekly National honors from college baseball. Natera joins Nick Gonzales and Zerek Saenz as the most recent Aggies to be recognized. Saenz won the honors on March 22, 2021, while Gonzales won the honors three times – twice in 2020 and once in 2019.
Overall, the Aggies’ pitching staff topped the Flames over the weekend, totaling 48 strikeouts. Averaging 15.4 strikeouts per nine innings, the Aggies rank third nationally in the category.
Natera and the Aggies will host Oakland for a three-game set beginning Friday, Feb. 25 at 3:00 p.m. at Presley Askew Field. All the action can be found on the WAC digital network or heard on 91.5 FM KRUX.
