Small magnitude 3.8 earthquake strikes in the evening 51 miles southeast of Carlsbad, Texas, USA
3.8 earthquake 2 October 20:39 (GMT -5)
A magnitude 3.8 earthquake occurred on the evening of Saturday, October 2, 2021 at 8:39 p.m. local time near Carlsbad, Eddy County, New Mexico, United States, as reported by the United States Geological Survey.
According to preliminary data, the earthquake was located at a shallow depth of 6.2 miles. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones because they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter and depth of the quake could be revised in the next few hours or minutes, as seismologists review the data and refine their calculations, or when other agencies release their report.
A second report was then released by the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC), which also listed it as a magnitude 3.8 earthquake.
Cities near the epicenter where the quake could have been felt as very weak tremors include Porterville (pop. 19) located 25 miles from the epicenter and Pecos (pop. 9,500) 36 miles away. In Carlsbad (population 29,000, 51 miles away) and Kermit (6,400 people, 55 miles), the quake was probably not felt.
