DEMING — Deming firefighters responded to three fires in less than 24 hours late Thursday evening and early Friday morning and afternoon.

Just before midnight Thursday, firefighters caught fire at the former Jack Key Ford-Lincoln-Mercury dealership on East Pine Street. The building had been derelict since 2018 and the property was for sale through a real estate company in southern New Mexico. The entire complex – showroom, offices, service center and garages – was gutted and a total loss.

Investigators from the New Mexico Fire Marshal’s Office in Santa Fe were at the scene Friday investigating the cause of the fire.

The Jack Key building was also burglarized recently. The contents that were taken away during this break-in were recovered by the Deming Police Department.

At 12:30 p.m. Friday, La Familia Panaderia (the family bakery) located on the 400 block of E. Poplar Street was engulfed in flames. This Mexican bakery is also addressed as a residence at the back of the building.

The roof of the building has collapsed and the structure appears to be a total loss.

The amount of time the two calls reached central dispatch occurred within 45 minutes of each other – within minutes.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, firefighters battled a brush fire at the corner of San Miguel and Walnut streets on the south side of Deming. Firefighters’ quick response may have prevented burning brush and mesquite from endangering residences in the densely populated neighborhood.
